Who played Shuri in Black Panther?
So who is Shuri in Black Panther? Her real name is Letitia Michelle Wright. She was born in Georgetown, Guyana, but later moved to London with her parents at her young age.
According to her interview with Shondaland (link: https://www.shondaland.com/live/a2008f8594/letitia-wright-interview-black-panther-avengers-infinity-war/), Letitia admits that moving to England opened a new world of opportunities for her.
“I found that the opportunities and the things that I was exposed to in London were completely different than in Guyana because, in Guyana, we’re more focused on the academic side of things, the usual stuff of being a lawyer or a doctor or a teacher, and in the UK, you could be more. You’re given the opportunity to explore more, such as acting, or being a musician, or if you want to be an artist, like a painter, or script writer. Nobody’s going to frown at that; they have something to facilitate that and to nurture that.”
She also talks of how her first day at school in London taught her about the transition and how she had to mold herself into British society.
“My first day of school kind of taught me about the transition. I saw how different everything was. My accent was different from the other kids. The way I perceived myself was different. I had to start molding myself into British society, and the way the kids spoke at my school. The kids would look at me funny, like, "Why do you sound like you’re Jamaican, but you’re not Jamaican, where are you from?" So I started to then change the way I was speaking.”
Letitia’s interest in acting was inspired by Keke Palmer’s acting in an American 2006 movie, Akeelah and the Bee (link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akeelah_and_the_Bee)
She made her first acting debut in 2011, appearing in Holby City and Top Boy.
She has since appeared in several other films such as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
She has also been nominated for and won several awards such as MTV Movie & TV Awards and British Academy Film Awards.
